Poplar Island Pumpkins
Family-style Halloween-season fun: pumpkin picking, costume contests, hayrides, haunted corn maze, Cryptid Trail, spooky movies, and more—check Facebook for details. 260 Poplar Island Road, Fairmont
30 minutes away
Fright Farm
Bigger and better every year since it opened in 1990, Fright Farm’s professional, 1.5- to 2-hour tour has entirely new sets and costumes and state-of-the-art scares every Halloween season. This year’s theme, Night at the Hawthorne, stages your visit to the once grand, now seedy and spooky Hotel Hawthorne. And that’s just the start of it. 2043 Springhill Furnace Road, Smithfield, Pennsylvania
45 minutes away
Nemacolin Castle
Said to be the third-oldest castle in the United States, the 1789 Nemacolin Castle is a house museum with a history of hauntings. The Brownsville Historical Society offers hour-long candlelight ghost walks Friday and Saturday evenings, October 17, 18, 25, and 26. A separate Brownsville Northside Ghost Walk introduces you to the old part of this Monongahela River town. Advance ticket purchase for both the ghost tours and the ghost walk is recommended. 136 Front Street, Brownsville, Pennsylvania
1 hour away
Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum
This sprawling 1864 institutional complex is naturally creepy, and it has a medieval-style mental health care history to match. The historic tours and daytime ghost tours can be unnerving enough—go for the nighttime ghost tour if you dare. 50 South River Avenue, Weston
