Dr. Mark Johnson understands the value of providing personalized care and its impact on a community. From performing robotic-based laparoscopic surgeries in a state-of-the-art operating room at Mon Health Medical Center to volunteering in a hospital with basic equipment in Pignon, Haiti, his commitment to improving patient outcomes has been the hallmark of his 25-year career as a general surgeon, earning him the designation of Surgeon of Excellence in Robotic Surgery.
Johnson considers minimally invasive surgery the most significant advancement during his career. But while it’s changed the way he takes care of his patients, he believes it works best when paired with empathy and compassion.
“Many people have had negative health experiences—perhaps providers who didn’t listen to them or weren’t able to help,” he says. “I make a point to spend a little extra time with each person, because it’s more important to me that I help you deal with whatever it is you’re dealing with. So know that, when you come to see me, you might have to wait—because I’m helping the person ahead of you, and sometimes that takes a few extra minutes.”
