It’s for real.
If you haven’t been to Cryptid Mountain Miniature Golf off Greenbag Road yet, now’s the season to give it a try. A former school counselor who happens to have a fascination with cryptids, Matt Tolliver opened the monster-themed destination about a year ago. When you’re there, be sure to stop in at the well-stocked gift shop for something new—a cryptid board game made in Morgantown.
The Cryptid Mountain gift shop has carried a board game geared toward teens, Hungry for Humans from Lonely Hero Games of West Virginia, for a while. Tolliver wanted to make a board game for younger children and their families to play together, so he teamed up with Morgantown Blueprint and Copy Center. Cryptid Mountain: The Board Game was designed with the likes of the classic games Candyland and Chutes and Ladders in mind—players choose cards, roll dice, advance forward, and occasionally have to go back a few spaces, and reaching the cozy cabin at the end is the object of the game.
Tolliver drew all of the images and designed the entire game himself, and Morgantown Blueprint printed it. He especially likes the game’s collaborative aspect. Up to six players can play at one time, and groups can be formed and work together. The price of the game is $40. “It was made in Morgantown with locally sourced materials,” he says, “and that’s special.”
