Combat even higher gas prices expected this summer with these close-by vacations.
Gas prices are predicted to top $5 by Memorial Day and could surge even higher by the time summer vacation season is in full swing. That’s a solid reason to plan a trip closer to home this year, and we’ve got some ideas.

Alpine Lake
Alpine Lake is a resort community in nearby Preston County with quite a few cozy mountain cabins and lake-side chalets available for booking. Once you’ve completed the roughly hour-long journey to the resort, there’s no reason to leave for the duration of your stay. Instead, choose from daily activities like biking, fishing, hiking, miniature golf, and dine in the resort’s restaurant for dinner most evenings.

Big Bear Lake Camplands
Big Bear Lake Camplands in Bruceton Mills has been inviting and delighting campers since 1972. With plenty of room to explore in this 5,000-acre development, you’ll never run out of things to do, especially with the court facilities on-site and a newly opened water park. Secure your tent or RV site here. Don’t miss the weekly dances held in the property’s community center throughout the summer.

Cheat Lake
Cheat Lake is just a stone’s throw from Morgantown but, with the right staycation ingredients, it can feel worlds away. Book your stay at the Lakeview Golf Resort, Trademark Collection by Wyndham or in a tiny home like this one steps from shore. Rent a boat or paddle the day away on non-motorized watercraft available from Sunset Beach Marina. Enjoy live music and dine al fresco at The Lakehouse Restaurant or Dockside Grille in Cheat Lake Marina.

Chestnut Ridge Park
Chestnut Ridge Park is another option for a nature-inspired staycation. Tent camp or book one of the park’s cabins all situated just 10 miles from Morgantown. Spend your days fishing, hiking, picnicking, or swimming, and don’t miss special events and live music throughout the summer.

Tygart Lake State Park
Tygart Lake State Park is just a short 45-minute jaunt south to Taylor County. You might forget you’re still in West Virginia after one look at the lake’s Caribbean-blue water. The camping facilities are excellent, and the cabins are very hospitable if you prefer sleeping indoors. Keep an eye out for native wildlife sightings during your stay, and be sure to check out the adventure lake for a full day of fun in the sun.
