SabroSon’s Latin sound speaks to your soul.
When Colombian flutist José Ramírez formed SabroSon Latin Band in Morgantown in 2016 with a handful of fellow professional musicians, it was a way to have fun and flex his musical muscles. But within the year, it reunited him with a childhood friend. She saw a video posted on Facebook and reached out to Ramírez. Now the two are married, and she’s the band’s pianist and accordionist.
That Hallmark-esque series of events foretold the future of SabroSon: uniting people over music.
SabroSon loosely translates to “flavorful music,” which is exactly what the band brings wherever it goes. Last year, that included two major events: the National Flute Association Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Mid-Atlantic Flute Association Convention in Washington, D.C. But they still performed at local venues like Gene’s Beer Garden. That’s because Morgantown will always be SabroSon’s home.
“I have traveled in Europe and Latin America, and Morgantown has a kindness that I haven’t seen in other places,” says Ramírez. “It has a spirit of caring for each other that is hard to have in giant cities.”
The band’s first music video was filmed thanks to the support of kind community members. It featured the song “Sabrosura Cumbiambera,” one of three to be released on an upcoming EP—which will be submitted to the Latin GRAMMYs this fall.
Despite horizons of international prestige, Ramírez and his fellow band members are scheduling events on their home turf here in Morgantown. And if you attend one, there’s something Ramírez wants you to know: Dance, even if you don’t know how. “When we play in Colombia, Europe, or even Florida, people dance immediately. But here in Morgantown, a lot of people are shy,” he says. “I think it’s because they think they need to know certain steps, or feel like they’re going to be judged. It’s surprising.
