Knowing when and how to pay closer attention to your skin is key.
It’s never too late to start taking better care of your skin. Michel Blankenship, owner of Spa Roma and the first licensed medical esthetician in Morgantown, has decades of experience and valuable advice for how to properly care for your skin as you age.
20s “In this age group we’re addressing acne and blackheads. I would suggest 20-somethings come into the spa every couple of months for a pre-cleaning facial and to get started on a mild peel pad system if acne is an issue. We might also introduce an early anti-aging treatment so that you’re not behind the gun. It’s never too early to get started.”
30s “In your 30s you start losing 1% of collagen fibers in your skin every year, and people don’t really notice it as it’s happening. In your 30s we would continue the good skin care we introduced in your 20s to address acne and early aging, and we would add an intense retinol cream seven days a week. We would also address nourishment issues that can change seasonally. We might even start talking about Botox, and fillers depending on how you’re feeling when you look in the mirror.”
40s “In your 40s, we might start dabbling in fillers, because you’ve probably started to notice the volume in your cheeks collapsing. I would caution you not to do Botox just because your friends are doing it—do it because you want to and after identifying specifically what you want to change. This is the age group that will start working on treatments for all-over skin-tightening. And it’s really important at this stage in life to start getting real about your skin and setting money aside for its care.”
50s and up “You’re definitely thinking about Botox and fillers at this stage in your life. You have lots of volume loss at this point, and some people might also start thinking about surgery. If you’ve done your job throughout the ages, that might not be necessary. If you haven’t, there are plenty of options, and treatments that can help. It’s really never too late to invest in your skin.”
