Get confident, creative, and fit at Flying Fox Fitness.

If your experience with creative, dance-based fitness is anything like Kat Timm’s, you’ll be obsessed within the year. Don’t fight it—your newfound infatuation will be more than worth the confidence you’ll gain from this creative outlet. And if you’re rolling your eyes and thinking, “Yeah, right. Athletics and dance aren’t my thing,” then you’re already halfway there, because Timm felt the same way at first.
Fast forward to today, and she just opened a dance-based adult fitness studio on Spruce Street: Flying Fox Fitness.
“I was always an academic person and an artistic person, but never an athletic person,” Timm explains. “But when I found these different movement styles, suddenly exercise became something that was so much fun. It’s not a chore. It’s something to look forward to.”

She realized her love for the art while living in Ohio and attending classes at a dance fitness studio. Moving to Morgantown a couple of years ago provided the perfect opportunity to create a similar space—one based on confidence, fitness, and creative expression—for her newfound community.
So, what is dance-based fitness?
Flying Fox Fitness currently offers a few different styles:
- Burlesque: A flirty, sassy performance art based on building confidence, technique, and musicality.
- Chair dance: An energizing and sporty dance utilizing a chair to enhance routines in the same way other dance styles might use a pole or aerial silks. It builds strength, flexibility, and body awareness.
- Fit & flex: This one’s all about functional fitness. You’ll build foundational skills like flexibility and balance—and open the door to other skills.
- Liquid Motion: A fluid, sensual style based on floor work. It enhances your core strength, mind–body connection, and creative confidence.
- Silk fans: This is a brand-new offering at the studio, taught by instructor Casey Hughes. It’s a graceful and agile form of dance using silk fans as an extension of your body.

Still not sure if any of those fitness styles are your style? You can try a variety with a dance sampler class—and there’s one tomorrow, Friday, September 18, at 6 p.m.
If you like it, go all in on a six-week session. The next session starts September 21, and you can register online. Some of the classes include choreographed routines that require consecutive attendance, but others allow one-time drop-in students.
This session is well-suited for the spooky season, with witch-themed songs and choreography. So if you’re looking for a way to have fun and get fit, don’t save it for a New Year’s resolution—start now.
Timm acknowledges that it can be scary to put yourself out there and learn something new. “I think a lot of people have had experiences where they show up in a fitness space and, for whatever reason, they feel like it isn’t the place for them. That can be a killer if you’re trying to build your confidence,” she says. “That is what made this genuinely sustainable for me: I feel like it attracts people who are open-minded and creative. We like supporting and celebrating one another.”
