More children have their own beds thanks to Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

Back during COVID-19, Rob Comber built a bed as a volunteer with Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), a nonprofit that builds beds for children in need. Comber helped deliver the bed and says, when he saw the joy on the kids’ faces, he was hooked.
SHP began in 2012 in Idaho, when Luke Mickelson and his family built a bed for a child from their church. He soon learned that many kids in his community needed beds. SHP was born and now has more than 200 chapters.
Comber, a retired chemist, attended a training. He and his wife, Grace, moved to Morgantown from Chattanooga, Tennessee, last spring to be closer to their daughter and grandchild, intent on starting an SHP chapter. Mission accomplished.
The brand new mattresses and bedding that accompany every delivered bed are donated—stores including Lowe’s and Serta Simmons Bedding have supported SHP nationwide. Here in Morgantown, Comber says Old Colony Realtors has been a huge help.
Volunteers are invited to occasional bed building days, where they can expect a fun, collaborative experience at stations that include sawing, sanding, and staining. “Helping these little kids,” Comber says, “it just makes your day.”
