Summer lessons start soon at Morgantown Piano Academy.
You’ve probably heard that playing an instrument is a great way to flex your mental muscles. According to Juliana Yap, owner and piano instructor at Morgantown Piano Academy, that’s not the only benefit. “When you practice, you also learn discipline and persistence,” Yap says, “and—especially for kids—when you learn something new, it builds confidence.”
If you or your child are curious about learning to play an instrument, one of Morgantown Piano Academy’s group classes is a great place to start. An instructor works with group members’ availabilities to schedule 10 half-hour sessions designed to gauge each student’s learning pace and help them decide if they’re ready to enroll in a one-on-one class semester. Each semester consists of 19 to 21 weekly sessions, depending on when holidays fall. “We tailor one-on-one lessons according to students’ needs,” says Yap.
Although Yap teaches only piano, other instructors at Morgantown Piano Academy offer classes in violin, viola, guitar, cello, and voice. And while some classes and workshops—such as this summer’s KIDSFest—are just for children, Morgantown Piano Academy has plenty to offer adults, too.
“Some adults think, ‘I can’t do this,’ or ‘I’m way too old to do this,’ but I don’t think learning music is about age—it’s about having fun,” Yap says. She believes learning to play an instrument can be a valuable and enjoyable experience for folks of all ages.
You can watch current students showcase what they’ve learned this semester at Morgantown Piano Academy’s piano recital on Sunday, June 12. “It’s open to the public, so people can see what we do,” says Yap. The recital will be held at the Museum Education Center at 20 Fine Arts Drive in Evansdale, with one session featuring younger students from 2 to 3 p.m. and another featuring older students from 4:15 to 6 p.m. And if you can’t make it, you can always check out past performances on Morgantown Piano Academy’s YouTube channel.
