Morgantown magazine gets in on National Bike to Work Day, Friday, May 20.
Our publisher, Nikki Bowman Mills, is shifting gears. In celebration of National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 20, she’s going to hop on her bike in South Park and pedal her way to New South Media’s headquarters in Granville. Cheer her on—or, better yet, why don’t you join her?
Three public events will take place on May 20 for Bike to Work Day, co-hosted by the City of Morgantown, WVU’s Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative, Adventure WV, and WVU’s Office of Sustainability:
- Morning Commute Pit Stop Light refreshments including coffee, water, and grab-and-go breakfast will be served under the WVU pop-up tent at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park from 7:30 to 9 a.m.
- Adventure WV West Run Woods Flow Trail Lunch Preview Meet by the WVU Student Recreation Center flagpole at noon for an out-and-back ride on Morgantown’s newest trail.
- After-Work Cycling Social Ride over to Mountain State Brewing Company to meet and mingle with fellow Morgantown biking community members from 4 to 7 p.m.
If you work for WVU, join their guided commute bike ride Friday morning and head off to your office at any point along the route. The approximately six-mile ride will launch from Gritstone Climbing + Fitness in Sabraton at 7 a.m., and participants will ride the Deckers Creek rail-trail to Hazel Ruby McQuain Park and continue on the Caperton Trail through the Core Arboretum, finishing at the Rec Center Refresh Box, where free iced coffee and breakfast treats will be provided from 7:30 to 9 a.m.
Don’t have a bike of your own? Adventure WV is offering free bike rentals from Thursday, May 19, through Monday, May 24. When filling out the rental form, include “Bike to Work Day!” in the comment section to secure a free rental. Faculty and staff can reserve a rental here.
Follow Nikki on Morgantown magazine’s social media as she navigates her way from South Park to Granville. She’s never attempted this feat before so, if you see her struggling, give her an encouraging shout out! And if you are driving, always be mindful and share the road with our two-pedalin’ friends.
