A Morgantown magazine Mover & Shaper, Health Care Edition.

From frontline hospital staff to indie acupuncturists, trauma therapists, and bodyworkers carving their own paths, our Movers & Shapers Health Care Edition brings you wellness professionals who are redefining what health looks like in this town.
There are many reasons to love Morgantown, but chief among them: It is home to the most advanced medical technology developments in urological care in the region. In large part, that’s because it’s also home to Dr. Jaschar Shakuri-Rad, who—among other firsts—performed the first urologic single-incision robotic surgery in West Virginia at Vandalia Health’s Mon Health Medical Center.
“By using a very small, less-than-two-inch incision, we can do major operations on various organs in the body, which is challenging for the surgeon but very good for our patients, as it minimizes disruption to their lives,” says Shakuri-Rad. He is also the first and only Center of Excellence–recognized surgeon in the region for UroLift, Aquablation, and Axonics Sacral Neuromodulation—all minimally invasive procedures.

Shakuri-Rad, a doctor of osteopathy and a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons who completed extensive training for the single-incision robotic procedure, now collaborates with colleagues around the world to optimize those techniques. “We not only do the surgeries here, but people are coming to us from all parts of the country and beyond to learn these surgical techniques,” he says. “It has really put West Virginia on the map.”
