We can all agree that a good burger starts with a good patty. But stack it with an inspired mix of flavors and textures in just the right proportions, and a good burger becomes unforgettable. These are the Morgantown burgers we can’t stop thinking about.
The Spicy Table 9 Burger
Table 9
Table 9’s airy riverside atmosphere makes for a great place to get your burger fix. Its Spicy Table 9 Burger tops a plump half-pound of mixed short rib and ground chuck with pepper jack cheese, cilantro and lime slaw, and chipotle aioli on a brioche bun with dill pickles on the side—a spicy, tangy symphony for $12. Feeling veggie? Sub in a house-made patty of chickpeas, rice, and curry—or order it on a lettuce wrap to make it gluten-free. Round it up with a salad, fries, sriracha fries, or crispy brussels sprouts.

The Sonny Burger
The Burger Place
Morgantown’s latest burger shop is the restaurant in Short Story Brewing’s new location in Westover. Its Sonny Burger, a tribute to Burger Place co-owner Tricia Kinnie’s grandfather, is a ⅓-pound patty—an exclusive blend of brisket, chuck, and short rib from Village Butcher and Market in Star City—with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, chopped onion, bread and butter pickles, and the proprietary Sonny Sauce, all on a golden potato bun for $11. Substitute grilled chicken or a black bean patty and, for a small upcharge, add waffle fries, tater tots, or onion rings. Thanks, Sonny!

The Umami Burger
Varsity Club
Varsity Club’s half-pound burger made of blended brisket, short rib, and sirloin rocks just about any ensemble it’s dressed in. But we like it as the decadent Umami Burger, topped with sauteed mushrooms, brie, black truffle butter, and garlic truffle aioli, all on a grilled brioche bun. Ordered straight from the menu, it’s served with Lay’s kettle-cooked chips and a dill wedge for $16. You can substitute a California veggie burger or upgrade to a Wagyu burger or an Impossible burger, and if you’re feeling hungry, add fries, sweet potato fries, truffle-oil fries, tater tots, or onion rings.

Classic American Wagyu Burger
Village Butcher and Market
Village Butcher is all about the meat. Its Classic American Wagyu Burger starts with a juicy 7-ounce patty of American Wagyu beef from Eleven Oaks Farm in Newville, Pennsylvania. The classic part is the toppings: your choice of sharp white cheddar, provolone, or white American cheese, plus Boston Bibb lettuce, tomato, and just a touch of mayo, all sandwiched on a toasted brioche bun. It’s the classic burger combo for good reason. Get it with side potato salad, pasta salad, or chips for $15.

The Iron Horse Burger
Iron Horse Tavern
For its signature burger, Iron Horse Tavern grills a half-pound Certified Angus blend of premium sirloin, top sirloin, chuck roast, and round to tender perfection. It’s topped with hickory-smoked bacon, fire-roasted poblano pepper, smoked gouda, and a house-made chipotle–bourbon BBQ sauce, and all of that smoky goodness is snugged onto a grilled brioche bun. Get it with house-fried chips for $16.50. You can add pub fries, tomato soup, house salad, beets & greens salad, or mac ’n’ cheese, or swap in a gluten-free bun. Impossible burgers are on the menu, too.
