Decorating a gingerbread house is a joyous tradition filled with candy and color. Even better, of course, is that the result is edible. Affixing gumdrops, marshmallows, and candy canes with frosting to a gingerbread house is fun for kids and kids at heart. You can try it yourself this Sunday, December 15, at Spark! Imagination and Science Center’s Gingerbread Workshop on Sunday, December 15 at the Mon County Center at Mylan Park.
What began in 2002 as the nonprofit Recreational Opportunities For All Young Kids Initiative (ROFAYKI) has blossomed over the years. The organization rebranded itself as Spark! Imagination and Science Center in 2016. Its mission is to inspire people of all ages to explore science and art through hands-on exhibits and programs that spark a lifelong love of learning. The Gingerbread Workshop will raise funds for Spark!’s events and its interactive museum space in the Mountaineer Mall.
Spark! held its first Gingerbread Workshop in 2019 and is happy to continue what the staff hopes will become an annual tradition.“We are excited to offer this great opportunity for families and friends to create their very own gingerbread house and just enjoy some fun activities together,” says Executive Director Julie Bryan. “We also hope to raise much needed funding for Spark! to be able to continue to provide educational programs to the community and are very thankful to our wonderful sponsors for making the event possible.”
The workshop is offered at two times—1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m—this Sunday at the Mon County Center at Mylan Park. The entrance fee of $40 includes a gingerbread house–making kit and admission for four people. Additional kits may be purchased at the event.
