Monongalia County is a geocaching hot spot—experience it for yourself in June during Morgantown’s mega-sized CacheMore event.

Mark Webb has been an avid geocacher for almost 20 years. Under his Geocaching app account, Troopbiz, he’s hidden the most caches in the state—more than 500 and counting! His love of the hobby started when he was just 8 years old, and he’s traveled across the country to cache. It was during these travels that he was inspired to start geocaching events here in Morgantown.
His first event was last year’s GeoWoodstock XXI, which, with more than 5,000 attendees, was the nation’s second-largest geocaching event of 2025. Webb couldn’t stop there. Enter Morgantown’s Friday–Sunday, June 26–28, 2026, extravanza: CacheMore.

Thanks to its immersive backstory, Webb describes CacheMore as reminiscent of an escape room or a Dungeons & Dragons game. It’s something straight out of science fiction: Beginning Friday morning, solve increasingly difficult challenges to train a fictional artificial intelligence—but things may not be quite as they seem, and Friday’s evening’s Signal Symposium will flip the mystery on its head.

One challenge takes you on a tour of Mountaineer Country in pursuit of Adventure Labs—fully virtual puzzles solved using clues found at corresponding locations, including restaurants, specialty shops, and historic sites.
But the sleuthing doesn’t have to stop there. The Visit Mountaineer Country GeoTour, available on the Geocaching app by the time of the event, highlights 20 beginner-friendly gadget caches across Mon and Preston counties, including 10 new ones hidden specially for CacheMore. The GeoTour is a permanent addition to the hundreds of caches already hidden in Mountaineer Country—one of the most active places in West Virginia for geocaching.
“North central West Virginia is an adventurous playground. We have great outdoor recreation opportunities and lively downtown scenes—it’s really the best of both worlds, whatever you’re looking for,” he explains. “When you’re in downtown Morgantown, you’re just 10 minutes away from ziplining or rock climbing. That really stands out to cachers in a way that no other state can.”
