Celebrate changemaking during WVU’s Day of Giving, a 24-hour fundraiser benefitting university programs and, ultimately, the people of Morgantown.
Last March, 24 hours was all it took to raise a whopping $30.4 million for education, health care, and innovation in West Virginia. What could manage such a feat? West Virginia University’s Day of Giving. Each year, this online WVU fundraising event transforms community generosity into scholarships, research, and student programs. And it’s growing: The 2024 event was the seventh Day of Giving, and it nearly doubled the $18.1 million raised the year prior.
On Wednesday, March 26, 2025, you’re invited to show your support for more than 50 participating WVU organizations. The list spans campus and beyond, including the university’s colleges, student-centered groups, medical programs, and more.
Logan Cuvo, an entrepreneurship and innovation student at WVU and founder of the hockey accessory start-up Best Dam Tape, brought his business to life with support from the Morris L. Hayhurst LaunchLab—a Day of Giving participant. Participating organization FirstGen Initiatives helps more than 4,000 first-generation students navigate higher education with confidence.
A participating organization that we at Morgantown magazine love, as journalists, is the independent voice of WVU: Student Media, including the Daily Athenaeum, U92 The Moose, and Prospect and Price Creative. Combined, the groups drive the next generation of journalism in West Virginia and beyond.
Student Media is home to students from all backgrounds, not just majors in the College of Creative Arts and Media. Any student interested in dipping their toes into the world of journalism can produce a play-by-play of a basketball game, cover Morgantown’s hottest breaking news, or design a logo for a local entrepreneur.
We encounter their work everywhere in town. Visitors to WVU’s downtown and Evansdale campuses are sure to stumble upon newsstands presenting copies of the Daily Athenaeum, Morgantown’s 130-year-old, student-led, independent newspaper. In addition to a weekly newspaper published on Wednesdays, students at the DA provide daily online coverage in breaking, cultural, and sports news.
The DA does more than cultivate dozens of future reporters, editors, and videographers—it serves as a watchdog for the communities of WVU and Morgantown. During the 2024 West Virginia Press Association convention, the DA was awarded first place in the Service to the Community category.
Tune into U92 The Moose to experience the college radio station where more than 100 students find a place in broadcast journalism. Adam Crowley, a 2013 graduate, credits his role as a professional radio host in part to his time as a sports broadcaster at U92.
The newest addition to Student Media is Prospect and Price Creative, a marketing and advertising firm. With support from professional staff, students connect with Morgantown businesses to lead projects in graphic design, social media, public relations, and more.
Between print and broadcast mediums, Student Media presents independent journalism to more than 10,000 readers, listeners, and viewers. Supporting Student Media this Day of Giving opens doors for students to travel for sporting events, maintain quality broadcasting equipment, and network with industry leaders at national journalism conferences.
Whether your interest is in independent journalism, scholarships for outstanding athletes on the WVU Dance Team, dual enrollment credits for high school students in the WVU Upward Bound program, or any of the other 50 organizations participating this year, Day of Giving is a chance for you to support all facets of the university and invest in Morgantown and West Virginia.
There’s also some friendly competition to sweeten the pot. At 12 a.m., hourly challenges and all-day challenges will begin. Share a photo of your pet decked out in WVU merch or record a creative rendition of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” to receive additional funding for your organization of choice.
