Browlicity is paving the way for cosmetic tattooing services in Morgantown.
Four years ago, Felicity Matos opened Browlicity, the first and only salon in the area to specialize solely in cosmetic tattooing, with eyebrows front and center. Matos prides herself in the brow technique of microblading, a form of cosmetic tattooing that is similar to a typical tattoo: Pigment is placed under the skin with a small blade to create natural-looking hair strokes and create the illusion of fuller, more defined brows.
Now at The Glass Factory in Star City, Matos shares some insight into her business and the microblading process.
Q: How did Browlicity come to be?
Felicity Matos: I have been microblading for about five and a half years now. It all started with my own freelance makeup business—I taught makeup classes to help clients learn, and I always heard: “I wish my eyebrows would just stay like this!” So, I started looking for a more permanent option and came across microblading. After training and traveling around for a while, I was ready to become more stationary, creating Browlicity. It doesn’t feel like work. It feels like “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I get to do this every day.”
Q: What are the benefits of microblading as opposed to other methods, like makeup or tinting?
FM: Microblading is semi-permanent, lasting anywhere from one to three years depending on your lifestyle, skin type, medications you take, and other factors. It’s time-saving, too—a lot of doctors and people with busier lifestyles like it because they can hurry off somewhere without having to worry about putting their brows on. If someone has health issues or loss of hair and they don’t know how or have the time to do brow makeup, it can help give them that confidence back.
Q: What should a new client know or do when considering microblading or semi-permanent makeup?
FM: Do your research. There are some health-related things people need to be aware of, like skin conditions and treatments that can be important to notice and consider. Microblading has a two-week healing period, too, and that can be a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for some people. When it comes to big events—like weddings—consider doing it months in advance to give yourself the proper time to heal and feel your best.
