A Morgantown magazine Mover & Shaper, Health Care Edition.
From frontline hospital staff to indie acupuncturists, trauma therapists, and bodyworkers carving their own paths, our Movers & Shapers Health Care Edition brings you wellness professionals who are redefining what health looks like in this town.
Executive director of Milan Puskar Health Right, Laura Jones has had a long and rewarding career helping patients gain access to care at the free clinic, regardless of their insurance status. She was initially hired as Health Right’s first clinical therapist and has spent 19 years as executive director and 25 years in total at the clinic.
Jones quickly saw the importance of access to mental health care. In her first year, she had 90 patients. While patient caseload has varied over the years, Health Right’s commitment to treating the whole person—from primary care and screenings to substance use and mental health—remains steadfast.
Another point of pride for Jones is starting one of the first harm reduction programs in the state. “What I’ve learned is that we have to do the right thing, even if it’s not the most popular thing,” she says. “It’s really something I feel very passionate about, that no one should fall through the cracks and that everyone should have access to what they need—not only to stay alive, but to thrive.”
