Law and history meet fiction in these Morgantown-penned books.
A good mystery novel keeps us on the edges of our seats, racing to put the pieces together before the big reveal. Forest Bowman, author and WVU Jackson Kelly Professor of Law Emeritus, has been honing that skill for decades.
His first book, The Secret of the 48th Foot, tells the story of two WVU professors who get caught up in the search for a chest of gold and silver lost in the mid-1700s, during the French and Indian War. The book began to take form nearly 40 years ago, but it was only in 2018 that Bowman had the opportunity to complete it. “I’ve enjoyed creating new characters out of old cloth,” he says, “putting them in situations and seeing what happens.”
In Bowman’s latest novel, 2021’s All Our Yesterdays, he uses his law background to spin a tale of deceit, identity, and justice. Readers will be guessing until the very end, wondering what one is truly capable of when facing the unthinkable. In May 2022, All Our Yesterdays was awarded a bronze medal in the Psychological Thriller genre by Global Book Awards, an organization that recognizes talent in self-publishing.
